Kerstin Muller – Southeast of England Tourist Guide

Age: 45-54

Career Journey:

Kerstin Muller began her career as a typist in East Berlin before the fall of the Wall, later working as a book-keeper and accountant in Germany and the UK. Seeking a change, she pursued an undergraduate diploma in the History of Art, which introduced her to Canterbury Cathedral. Volunteering as a guide sparked a passion for tourism, leading her to qualify as a Blue Badge Tourist Guide for the Southeast of England. Kerstin now enjoys sharing the region’s history and beauty with visitors from around the world, including German-speaking groups.

Skills and Expertise:

Kerstin’s shift from an office-based career to guiding helped her develop valuable interpersonal and organisational skills. "It doesn’t always go smoothly, and staying focused and calm in difficult situations is something I’ve learned on the job." She has also built confidence in public speaking, though she admits to still feeling "a little nervous" before tours. Her qualification as a Lowland Walking Leader through Mountain Training England allows her to take visitors into the countryside, offering a unique perspective on the region’s natural beauty.

Career Highlights:

Passing her first official tour at Canterbury Cathedral in 2013 was a proud moment. She successfully led a general English-language tour, which was followed by a daunting yet exciting German tour with 20 visitors. Another major achievement was overcoming personal challenges to pass the Southeast England exams after a second attempt, a milestone made even more special as the results were released on her late son’s birthday.

What She Enjoys Most:

Kerstin finds guiding incredibly rewarding and enjoys seeing visitors take home "beautiful memories." She acknowledges that "you can’t do it right for every single person," but the joy of sharing the region's culture far outweighs any challenges. The variety of the job—from grand cathedrals to picturesque countryside—keeps things fresh and exciting. She treasures the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life and feels grateful for having made the transition from a desk job to an active and fulfilling career.
